Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
I currently charge £37 for a standard one hour online lesson.
Is online GCSE maths tuition effective?
I have found that it works for around 95% of my students. A small minority are not great with communication online or do not really share the work that they have completed during the week - for these students I politely recommend that they find a face to face tutor. However for everyone else I have found that the online tutoring is just as effective, if not better than, in person tuition.
Online maths tuition means that there are less distractions, no travel/settling in time and so the lessons are more productive.
What equipment is needed for online tuition?
You will need a decent laptop with a camera and microphone - these can be built in or separate accessories. I use an online whiteboard and if you have a tablet and stylus it means your child can also write on the whiteboard too - however this is an extra and not neccessary for an effective lesson. Your child will need a good textbook - I currently use the AQA/Edexcel GCSE Student Book.
How long have you been teaching?
I have been teaching STEM for over 15 years. I changed role to a private maths tutor in 2019.
What approach do you have when teaching gcse maths?
I encourage my students to aim high through building a professional and friendly relationship. I don’t believe that punishments or getting angry at students is effective or good for anyone.
I show my students how to be honest with themselves about the amount of work they are putting in and then we work together on increasing it and working on the maths topics that will be most effective in increasing their confidence and their test scores.
I explain everything patiently and thoroughly until I am confident the student understands everything.
Practice is very important in maths and I show my students what type of questions to practice and when.
How does it take to see an improvement?
My students usually start to improve within around 2 weeks and get a better test in the class tests within 4 weeks.
It usually takes around 3 months to move up 2 GCSE grades. Though it does depend on the student and how hard they are willing to work, some students have improved by a lot more.
My child is currently failing, can you help?
Yes, I have helped several students move from failing to a strong pass on the foundation gcse maths paper.
My child wants a level 7, 8 or 9 - can you help?
Yes, I have helped several students move the average grades to attaining the top grades. It requires in depth knowledge on certain topics and a very good exam strategy.
